If you want to understand what it is to be Jewish, to experience my ethnic world firsthand – which some call neo-Chassidus (free Hasidism), this one day within our lunar-solar year explains all(!). This teaching on “breath” and “trust” by this Chassid, this Rebbe, resonates with me, because I’ve been attentive to noticing the “pause” between breaths myself. When and everytime my mind *pauses* to even notice! …

“In this I trust” that the breath will תשובה “return” to me after the *pause* following my last breath, like I תשובה “return” to life after every momentary sleep. This is all that we can ask for in life! The *freedom* to *trust* and find peace between the breaths. And to activily seek צדקה “justice” within this world!!! While we are still alive, of course.

In Judaism (Jewish community -ism) there is no eschatological belief that is the defining *reason* for our engaging in ethno-religious practice. There is *no* Heaven or Hell dichotomy to blindly believe in, *nor* is there 40 virgins in some “afterlife” for the pious males! Jews reject fantasies.
In Judaism, there is only the “hope” for the *blessing* of survival through the next year. This is the *reason* for the “Days of Awe,” that begins our *ritual* calendar *every* year! And, this type of hope is utterly in vain, if we Jews do *not* step up and support each other – through this daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly cycles!
In Judaism, for “God” to be made known on Earth, the subjects of this divine Landowner *must* act for the survival of the “people/nation.” Hence, the laws of D’varim – the vassal treaty between our primal and enlightened selves!
Torah teaches that survival is a communal effort! And, that individual death is permanent – unless, somehow, *we* achieve the arrival of the “Messianic” age. Meaning, the age of human history where *we* humans **choose** “peace” between us!
You do know, don’t you, that the prophesied “Messiah” of Judaism is a full-blooded human, with the same limitations as *all* of us, yes? He ain’t no demiGod! You do know that one cannot be saved through a belief in a guru, an idol, or even a *Divine* being, yes?!
Without our adherence to life-saving actions in the *now*, which is both the mandate and the fulfillment of Torah, then we have no right to a “world to come” and will have failed to bring it about, as well! This is why we read Torah, and we *cling* to Torah, and we do the yearly rituals – no matter how atheist or theist we discover ourselves to be as Jews!
We know, purpose is made in healing the lives *now* of those who are still breathing “the breath of life”!
Below is Mincha, the other half of Yom Kippur! The half that says that we’re, so far, on a great path into the future. So long, as we remain ethnically *resilient* as an ethno-religious people!

Everytime I hear the babies in these “services,” crying suddenly because they don’t know how to speak yet … no matter how many Shoahs (Holocausts, Catastrophes) that wipe out whole families, I *know* that we will live on – because we inherited our cherished literatures! My ancestors have a future with or without me. All the more reason to “return,” and be grateful.

It is my hope that, by sharing in my posts the broad historical view, I encourage others to see our place in perspective with the whole history of the human race and the cosmic history of this universe. It is far too easy to spend most, if not all, of our days focused in a self-oriented narrow perspective on life, our society, and the beliefs we hold dear to. Broadening our horizons, seeing the forest along with the tree, is a vital step towards understanding.
