Both Arabs and Europeans try to divide Indigenous Peoples. In the “West” on skin color differences. In the “East” on religious differences. Racism is racism! Arabs and Europeans are experts at racism. And in fictitious history. Muslims and Christians are experts at racism! All Indigenous Peoples are trying to survive assimilation into racism. Don’t be a racist!<\/p>\n

“To fix the world in the kingdom of God!” Where is the kingdom of YHWH? The land of Israel (Judea, Samaria, and Jordan)! How do we “fix the world”? \u201cI feel bad for the Aleinu prayer, which many of us recite thrice daily. This beautiful poem is one of the primary sources of the value of tikkun olam, it is one of the places where the phrase first comes up, explicitly articulating the value of \u201ctikkun olam,\u201d to fix and heal a broken world.<\/p>\n

Frustratingly, some social justice warriors have cut the verse in half, adopting only the first part, while leaving the second part on the chopping block. The verse is \u05dc\u05ea\u05e7\u05df \u05e2\u05d5\u05dc\u05dd \u05d1\u05de\u05dc\u05db\u05d5\u05ea \u05e9\u05d3\u05d9, to fix the world \u201cby heralding the divine majesty.\u201d<\/p>\n

In order words, Jewish tikkun olam is a theological trope, not just a social justice value. Our impetus to fix what is broken is based on a recognition that this world is the dwelling place of God\u2019s immanence. As a result, there is divinity in every person, regardless of color, race, religion or orientation.<\/p>\n

That is what fuels OUR desire for tikkun olam. Our fight for social justice is driven by a desire to reveal, cherish, honor and celebrate the divine spark in every human being.<\/p>\n

That is a unique kind of social justice warfare, and that is the one we have to bring to the world: \u05dc\u05ea\u05e7\u05df \u05e2\u05d5\u05dc\u05dd \u05d1\u05de\u05dc\u05db\u05d5\u05ea \u05e9\u05d3\u05d9. To spread the sacred spark of divinity universally, so that all of humanity is treated as one and the same because of the divine spark ALL OF US have in common.<\/p>\n

In last week\u2019s parsha we learn about the midwives who spoke truth to power, defying the vicious decree to kill the Jewish male newborns. They defied that evil decree, but what was their impetus to do that? Yirat shamayim, as the pasuk says so explicitly: \u05d5\u05ea\u05e8\u05d0\u05e0\u05d4 \u05d4\u05de\u05d9\u05dc\u05d3\u05d5\u05ea \u05d0\u05ea \u05d4\u05d0\u05dc\u05d5\u05e7\u05d9\u05dd \u05d5\u05ea\u05d7\u05d9\u05d9\u05e0\u05d4 \u05d0\u05ea \u05d4\u05d9\u05dc\u05d3\u05d9\u05dd. Their subservience to a higher power gave them the courage to reject Pharoh\u2019s evil decree.<\/p>\n

When R. Avraham Joshua Heschel joined hands with MLK to defeat racism, they did so as warriors for HKBH; \u05dc\u05ea\u05e7\u05df \u05e2\u05d5\u05dc\u05dd \u05d1\u05de\u05dc\u05db\u05d5\u05ea \u05e9\u05d3\u05d9. Not as soldiers in a social justice crusade.<\/p>\n

And that is our charge today: to fight racism and other social justice evils by calling attention to the sacredness of every human soul: man, women, Jew, non-Jew, white and non-white \u2014 once and for all to truly fix a broken world \u05d1\u05de\u05dc\u05db\u05d5\u05ea \u05e9\u05d3\u05d9<\/p>\n

As we plead year after year, \u05d5\u05d9\u05e8\u05d0\u05d5\u05da \u05db\u05dc \u05d4\u05de\u05e2\u05e9\u05d9\u05dd \u05d5\u05d9\u05e9\u05ea\u05d7\u05d5\u05d5 \u05dc\u05e4\u05e0\u05d9\u05da \u05db\u05dc \u05d4\u05d1\u05e8\u05d5\u05d0\u05d9\u05dd \u05d5\u05d9\u05e2\u05e9\u05d5 \u05db\u05d5\u05dc\u05dd \u05d0\u05d2\u05d5\u05d3\u05d4 \u05d0\u05d7\u05ea.<\/p>\n
