We don\u2019t know whether this person was bullied or shamed themselves in their childhood, we don\u2019t know what caused them to want to shame others and shame themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n
When asked whether or not exhibitionist disorder\u00a0\u2015 or someone acting on an urge to display, fondle or stimulate themselves in front of a stranger \u2015 was a possible motivating factor, Kramer responded with caution.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou have to look at what exhibitionist disorder really means,\u201d she said. \u201cWhy are they exhibiting themselves? What is the gain? And what is it that they\u2019re trying to do? You still have to really talk to the person to find out, you just can\u2019t label people.\u201d<\/p>\n
Sex therapist Alexandra Katehakis, who was interviewed by The Cut,\u00a0described non-consensual masturbation as a manifestation of \u201csexualized hostility\u201d against their victims, which can sometimes be traced back to childhood trauma or abuse. Kramer seconded this possibility.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cDevelopmentally, we all go through different phases,\u201d\u00a0she said. \u201c[Masturbation] would be [linked to] a phase in this person\u2019s development they weren\u2019t able to complete or finish. We see different pieces of ourselves stuck in different phases, and our behavior reflects that.<\/p>\n
Chaffers, however,\u00a0took issue with the idea that victims of childhood sexual abuse, in particular, are more likely to become perpetrators of sexual abuse as adults.<\/p>\n
