“The author suggested that this is a Christian mindset that says “It’s a battle between Christianity and the forces of darkness, and some sacrifices have to be made.”.. James’ father may think he is fighting a battle for Jesus. But in fact, he himself has become a warrior of the forces of darkness, fighting against love, against family, against compassion, against all that is good.” – James F. McGrath
If you say you are an “intellectual”, a “conservative”, a bible-believing “scientist” who is willing to explore the evidence to get a real understanding of this reality (and its origins), then you cannot honestly approach study and exploration with a pre-determined end result in mind – sifting through research to find only what evidence supports your belief (bible-based) and throwing away the rest (“the chaff”). Real scientists do not work this way, and evidence-based thinkers do not work this way! Deciding the end proof/theory and refusing evidence that refutes the validity of this pre-determined belief (especially when it’s overwhelming against, and because it speaks against the biblical belief) only clouds your judgement and leads you to mis-teach facts with pre-determined fiction. Real scientists, conservatives, and intellectuals embrace the body of evidence, even if it requires them to change their beliefs and modify their evidence-based theories.
This process of understanding evidence-based truth is not an “atheistic” or “liberal” agenda to discredit religion. Rather, it is an embracement of reality as it really is, as it came about, and as it is continuously unfolding. As comforting as a fantasy belief about the world is, it remains no more than the fantasy that it is. It is the reality of human fiction in progress. The Bible is not based in evidence, but in belief and myths that justify such beliefs. It is a poor source for getting to reality truths! … Oh, and the only reason for an evolutionary scientist, atheist, or any other religiously so-called “liberal” to not debate creation/evolution or the Bible is the repititious self-justifying circular logic presented that prevents any real discussion and debate of the demonstrable evidence that is presently available to us. It is very tiring to debate those who will not listen and consider all to protect their cherished religious beliefs!
By the way, the reason I present this photographed letter and the comments above, is because such religious “fundamentalist” fervor affects highly religious Jews as much as it affects Christians and Muslims. I, too, as a Jewish son of a father have received my own version of this letter to end a relationship between father and son over my orientation and lifestyle. Thus, it has become my secular Jewish duty to do battle with all three monotheisitic religious forces of darkness upon this planet, who are destroying the lives of children, family, friends, community, state, nation, and the world of human communities with their religious dogma and theocratic false-truths! Look not at the words, look at the acts and consequences that result from them.
Christianity vs. the Forces of Darkness
Some Christians are gung-ho about the notion of being in a battle against the forces of darkness. And what they do is take their own personal enemies and assume that the appropriate thing to do is to wage holy war against them in Jesus’ name. Authentic Christianity is about realizing that you are and may at any point end up being the forces of darkness. You yourself are the one with the penchant to condemn others but not yourself, to allow justified indignation to turn into hatred, to demonize your enemies in a way that turns you into a demon yourself.
Fighting Against the Forces of Darkness
“I know that you here are in the front line trench against powerful forces of darkness,” encouraged the speaker on the creation-evolution debate. “I salute you. I sympathize with you. Fight the good fight.”
A quote from Dr. Henry Morris speaking to a symposium of Christian scientists? No. A motivational talk from Dr. Patti Nason to a gathering of Christian science teachers? No.
Actually, a quote from Dr. Richard Dawkins during a recent lecture at the University of Kansas. An ethologist—one who studies animal behavior—and an evolutionary theorist from Oxford University, Dawkins is a celebrated biologist touting his new book, The God Delusion.
