No Religious Test Of Office In The United States Of America

Donald Trump explains “why our elected officials put their hands on the Bible and say ‘so help me God’ as they take the oath of office… In America, we don’t worship government. We worship God.” – at Liberty University, May 13, 2017

Sadly, this is partly true. But, it’s not constitutional and not required. The “oath of office” upon the president and elected officials has absolutely nothing to do with “God”. Seriously!

Legitimately elected presidents John Quincy Adams and Franklin Pierce took their oath of office with their hand on a book of U.S. laws. Legitimately elected president Lyndon Johnson took his oath of office with his hand on a Roman Catholic missal. Legitimately elected president Theodore Roosevelt did not use a Bible while taking the oath of office.

The purpose of the Presidential Oath of Office is to swear or affirm that he/she “will to the best of his ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.” – Article II, Section One, Clause 8 of the United States Constitution. Adding “so help me God” at the end of the oath of office is not even required, because this oath has nothing to do with “God” worship.

“Before he enters the Execution of his Office, he shall take the following Oath or Affirmation: ‘I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.'” – Article II, Section One, Clause 8 of the United States Constitution.

“I, [name], do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter.” – For Vice Presidents and “elected officials” of the U.S. government, Article VI, Clause 3 of the United States Constitution.

John F. Kennedy, 12 September 1960:
“Neither do I look with favor upon those who would work to subvert Article VI of the Constitution by requiring a religious test, even by indirection. For if they disagree with that safeguard, they should be openly working to repeal it… I am not the Catholic candidate for President. I am the Democratic Party’s candidate for President who happens also to be a Catholic.

I do not speak for my church on public matters; and the church does not speak for me. Whatever issue may come before me as President, if I should be elected, on birth control, divorce, censorship, gambling or any other subject, I will make my decision in accordance with these views – in accordance with what my conscience tells me to be in the national interest, and without regard to outside religious pressure or dictates. And no power or threat of punishment could cause me to decide otherwise.

But if the time should ever come – and I do not concede any conflict to be remotely possible – when my office would require me to either violate my conscience or violate the national interest, then I would resign the office; and I hope any other conscientious public servant would do likewise.” – during his campaign for the presidency, which he legitimately became elected.

“I try to explain this to people all the time. But for some reason they think I’m trying to start an argument.” Yep, yep. Our modern revisionist beliefs do not erase or change the factual reality that this country was not founded in Judeo-Christian beliefs and principles. And pointing this out really pisses people off, especially if they are Christian.

The historical fact is that this nation was founded as a colonial revolt to enforced “taxation without representation” perpetrated by England, and was founded with great trepidation over endorsing any kind of religion over another by our government. This factual reality is made very clear in the writing of the U.S. Constitution, and in the many writings of the founders of this nation.

These are simple self-evident historical facts, regardless how much some in this country wish and desire it to be otherwise. Or, more to the point, aggressively teach it to be otherwise for religious and social ignorance sake. This is a religious nation, of many theistic and non-theistic beliefs. But, it is #NotAChristianNation, as the founders of this nation made very clear.

Not accepting the reality of our country’s founding is equivalent to not accepting the value of history’s lessons and the importance of preserving and enhancing egalitarian civil liberties that our nation’s founders pursued.

You can deny the historical reality all you want, attempt to teach incorrectly and dishonestly for religious/political gain. But, as I’ve heard it said, such denial does not in any way prove a point. Further, it doesn’t change the historical reality of our nation’s founding.

Additional historical note, before the rise of Nazi Germany, children were taught to place their right hand to their heart, then stretch their arm out before them, palm down, when reciting the original Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. 1. I live very near to a university that supposedly is big on science. But, what they don’t tell the public is that, as a prominent religious Adventist university, their science is rooted absolutely in the belief that the earth and universe is only 6,000 years old. And that scientists with all these methods for determining the age of things really do not have any answers, because they reject “God” and the “Bible”. So, the so-called scientific research they’re doing – collections of fossil bones, analyses of rock, etc – is all being done to valid theories that prove the “truth” of their bible.

So, real science says that the evidence shows that all the dinosaurs were killed off by an accidental and unfortunate in timing cataclysm reigned down from the sky, an asteroid. But, the creationists pretending to conduct science under the guise of university level education, insist that there is “no reliable method available” for testing the age of things beyond the timeline of their bible, because it is inherently wrong according to their interpretation of their bible. More so, they insist, that dinosaurs and humans cohabited the earth together, and that the reason for all the mass of dinosaur bones in one place at certain bible-discernible geological time is because “the flood” distributed them across the lands this way, when they drowned. … I kid you not!

This is what these religious “students” are being taught is science, at a “university” level, and graduating with degrees on this pseudoscience. I know, because I talked with a student of this Adventist university who was curating the dinosaur bone collection museum, and she literally had no awareness of any mass extinctions of species prior to the creationist imagined world-wide “flood” event. I kid you not.

Dinosaur asteroid hit ‘worst possible place’
    http://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-39922998
The researchers recovered rocks from under the Gulf of Mexico that were hit by an asteroid 66 million years ago.
The nature of this material records the details of the event.
It is becoming clear that the 15km-wide asteroid could not have hit a worse place on Earth.
The shallow sea covering the target site meant colossal volumes of sulphur (from the mineral gypsum) were injected into the atmosphere, extending the “global winter” period that followed the immediate firestorm.
Had the asteroid struck a different location, the outcome might have been very different.

I kid you not! This is what these religious students are being taught is science – at a “university” level (!) – and graduating with degrees on this pseudoscience. I kid you not. 2. “For any cynic (of politics/elections) who thinks the people can’t course-correct our own disenfranchisement, this is about as feasible as it gets.” Seriously, folks! We can take back control. So, demand it in your state!

“In a representative democracy you need a critical mass of voters who are engaged and informed,” says David Burke, founder of the civic engagement organization Citizens Take Action. “The Electoral College disincentivizes voters in a majority of states to get involved with or vote in the presidential election. Most states are safe states and the outcome is preordained.”

Why doesn’t anyone know we’re incredibly close to replacing the Electoral College with the popular vote?

The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact has passed a total of 35 state legislative chambers in 23 states
If people continue to believe their votes don’t count, a lack of participation empowers fringe-y power grabs. If we have four years to derail the current train wreck our society is quickly becoming, shouldn’t we force the political machine to campaign differently and include all of us? Especially if the infrastructure to do it is so close to implementation?

The National Popular Vote bill would guarantee the Presidency to the candidate who receives the most popular votes in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. It has been enacted into law in 11 states with 165 electoral votes (CA, DC, HI, IL, MA, MD, NJ, NY, RI, VT, WA). It will take effect when enacted by states with 105 more electoral votes.

    National Popular Vote –

Most recently, the bill was passed by a bipartisan 40–16 vote in the Republican-controlled Arizona House, 28–18 in Republican-controlled Oklahoma Senate, 57–4 in Republican-controlled New York Senate, and 37–21 in Democratic-controlled Oregon House. It has passed one house in 12 additional states with 96 electoral votes (AR, AZ, CO, CT, DE, ME, MI, NC, NM, NV, OK, OR).

  3. Hmmm, Trump just got trumped … by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. Nice! #SpecialCounsel #RodRosenstein

As Trump interviews potential FBI Directors to replace fired James Comey, Rosenstein appoints former FBI Director Robert Mueller as independent Special Counsel for the Trump-Russia election scandal investigation. White House is stunned at this time over just how little power the Executive branch actually has over the Legislative and Judicial branches in the United States of America. This isn’t a banana republic. #RobertMueller #Trump

What’s to stop Trump from firing Mueller? The question being asked. Here’s the answer:

“Mueller is insulated — albeit not completely — from Trump’s penchant for firing people who get under his skin. “The Special Counsel may be disciplined or removed from office only by the personal action of the Attorney General,” which in this case means Acting Attorney General Rosenstein. Mueller, moreover, may only be removed for “misconduct, dereliction of duty, incapacity, conflict of interest, or for other good cause, including violation of Departmental policies.”

Beyond Mueller’s partial shielding from Trump’s wrath, he also enjoys an important power that should give pause to anyone in the Trump administration that attempts to thwart his investigation. Federal regulations give Mueller “the authority to investigate and prosecute federal crimes committed in the course of, and with intent to interfere with, the Special Counsel’s investigation, such as perjury, obstruction of justice, destruction of evidence, and intimidation of witnesses; and to conduct appeals arising out of the matter being investigated and/or prosecuted.””

A president cannot directly fire Special Counsel, such firing can only be done by the DOJ Attorney General. – 28 CFR 600.7 – Conduct and accountability.

Update: Despite what the regulation says (verbatim, is removable “only by the personal action of the Attorney General”), according to the writer of this regulation, the president still has the power to directly fire the Special Counsel. But, it’s to his political doom, if he does, and to the destruction of our government of laws, if he gets away with this. Hmmm, stand corrected on this.

  4. Before the public, Mike Pence venerates Trump, to near worship, as a presidential second coming. When addressed personally, he denies any knowledge of impropriety or wrong doing, especially any of his involvement in it. And, he spends as much time as is possible OUT of the public awareness, in a desperate attempt to survive the burning from Trump’s presidential scandal and obvious illegitimacy. He is making a bid for the presidency himself.

Thomas Jefferson spoke about Mike Pence many long years ago. Specifically, about the lying evangelical aligning himself with the crooked rich despot. Pay attention and wake up. Consider Jefferson’s words: “In every country and in every age, the priest has been hostile to liberty. He is always in alliance with the despot, abetting his abuses in return for protection to his own.” – in a letter to Horatio G. Spafford, March 17, 1814

America, beware the snake oil salesmen in your midst, for this class of elitist capitalists is the reason there is no longer a viable middle class in the United States of America – only, now, rich and poor. America, beware the lying evangelical – who, like his/her partisan GOP counterparts, have only the interests of their theological/ideological absolutism and nationalism in mind.

Professor who predicted Trump win says Pence should be investigated too
    http://www.cnbc.com/2017/05/19/pence-should-be-investigated-too-prof-lichtman-commentary.html
So far, Mike Pence had received a free pass for his false statements to the American people.
It’s unlikely that he was fooled by Mike Flynn. He may be part of a cover-up.
The theory of Pence as innocent victim lacks credibility because he has a history of lying. He should be investigated.
For a seasoned politician who served for 12 years in Congress and three years as governor of Indiana, Pence has seemed remarkably easy to fool.
Pence is complicit in the lies propagated by the Trump administration and perhaps even involved in a cover-up of potentially impeachable transgressions. That’s why he must be investigated thoroughly by the Congress and the FBI along with the president and other members of the Trump campaign team and administration.
The theory of Pence as innocent victim lacks credibility because he has a history of lying that extends from his candidacy to his tenure as vice president. … And this is historical recorded fact!

  5. “An Associated Press-NORC poll found… Only about one in five Democrats say that majority groups such as Christians or whites face a lot of discrimination. Republicans, on the other hand, believe Christians and whites face roughly as much discrimination as immigrants, Muslims and gay and transgender people. Republicans see (social) changes eroding a core white Christian American identity and perceive themselves to be under siege as the country changes around them. White Christians are today struggling to face a new reality: the inevitable surrender of table ownership in exchange for an equal seat. And it’s this new higher-stakes challenge that is fueling the great partisan reorientation we are witnessing today.” – Robert Jones, The Collapse of American Identity

There it is – in the last two sentences! Like it was for majority white slave owners before the Civil War, so it is now for majority white Christians in the United States. The difference between the two, Christians aren’t being told to end their religious liberty, guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution – only that they follow the Constitution and not oppress and discriminate, just because they are a dwindling majority in the United States (soon to be a minority!). We historical minorities know that you *feel* these social demographic changes to be an onslaught of persecution upon you, but one cannot still be the majority and be the persecuted in the United States. We’re only demanding our Constitutional guaranteed equal seat at the table, and you need not fear losing your seat in the process of demographic and cultural changes – the U.S. Constitution still applies!

    The Collapse of American Identity
    https://www.nytimes.com/2017/05/02/opinion/the-collapse-of-american-identity.html?_r=4
There have been other times in our history when the fabric of American identity was stretched in similar ways — the Civil War, heightened levels of immigration at the turn of the 20th century and the cultural upheavals of the 1960s.
But during these eras, white Christians were still secure as a demographic and cultural majority in the nation. The question at stake was whether they were going to make room for new groups at a table they still owned. Typically, a group would gain its seat in exchange for assimilation to the majority culture. But as white Christians have slipped from the majority over the past decade, this familiar strategy is no longer viable.
The temptation for the Republican Party, especially with Donald Trump in the White House, is to double down on a form of white Christian nationalism, which treats racial and religious identity as tribal markers and defends a shrinking demographic with increasingly autocratic assertions of power.
For its part, the Democratic Party is contending with the difficulties of organizing its more diverse coalition while facing its own tribal temptations to embrace an identity politics that has room to celebrate every group except whites who strongly identify as Christian.
